Cedar Cove, Daufuskie Island
The owners of Cedar Cove, the Bostwick family, have known for forty years that this 50-acre parcel of high ground and marsh is something extra special. As one of the largest private land owners in Beaufort County with some 10,000 acres, they had the opportunity to pick and choose any site along the Atlantic Ocean and, literally miles and miles of river and marsh. When the Bostwicks sold more than 2,300 acres of their property on Daufuskie Island in 1979 to Charles Cauthen and his investors, they reserved for themselves Cedar Cove. The Bostwicks understood that the true beauty of Cedar Cove could not be appreciated for a number of years, until after Haig Point had an opportunity to mature.
Mr. Cauthen, with his partner Edward D. Stone Company of Ft. Lauderdale, painstakingly researched, planned, and permitted Haig Point, the 1,050 acres of land surrounding Cedar Cove. In 1984, Mr. Cauthen and his investors sold Haig Point to International Paper, who subsequently funded the development of Haig Point. Today, Haig Point is the premiere development on Daufuskie Island, and one of the most upscale developments in the Low Country. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in Haig Point for infrastructure and private home construction. The centerpiece is the 29-hole Rees Jones championship golf course that has been rated amongst the top 100 courses in the world by Golf Magazine. There are only 725 lots within Haig Point, of which 670 have been sold. Approximately 200 living units, in the form of estate homes, cottages, and townhomes have been constructed.
Cedar Cove is surrounded on three sides by the manicured grounds of exclusive Haig Point, with the fourth side comprised of the Intracoastal Waterway. The property is breathtaking, with deep-water frontage, majestic sunsets, ancient cedars, and a canopy of live oaks.
Only a select few will be able to call Cedar Cove home. With only 19 home sites, including four private islands, Cedar Cove is destined to become the premiere address on Daufuskie Island. Savannah brick and cobblestone will frame the entrance to Cedar Cove, announcing to those who pass through the gates that they have arrived at a unique waterfront enclave. Each property owner will enjoy dock space at either one of the private docks or the community docks, making this the only waterfront community on Daufuskie with designated access to a slip. Although deeded access through Haig Point negates the need to become members of the club, membership in Haig Point is strongly encouraged to gain access to the numerous amenities including the golf course and ferry service.
The development of Cedar Cove once again brings together the Bostwick family and Mr. Cauthen. Mr. Cauthen, who is still a partner in the remaining 1,250+ acres originally purchased from the Bostwicks, is developing and marketing the property with his firm, The Daufuskie Company. The Bostwicks, through Widewater Dunes LP, are funding the development efforts. The development, which has been given final subdivision and development approval by Beaufort County, will provide roads, water, sewer, cable, and underground electric for each home site. The wooden bridges (each rated for 20 tons) that provide access to the private islands are already in place.
A separate homeowners association has been formed to oversee maintenance of the open space, common areas, bridges and docks.
As you may have heard, there really is a new day dawning on Daufuskie. We look forward to making new and exciting announcements relative to our wonderful and unique island.
