Daufuskie Island offers a variety of lifestyle options, ranging from secluded homesites deep in the woods to luxurious service and amenities in a golf course community, and a number of options in between.
Cedar Cove
Just recently released for sale, Cedar Cove represents what living in the Lowcountry is all about. Surrounded by magnificent live oaks and centuries-old cedar trees, with stunning views of the Intracoastal Waterway, only 18 fortunate property owners will call Cedar Cove home. Each homesite is sold with a designated space on either a community or private dock in Cedar Cove. Only eight lots are currently left!
Haig Point Plantation
Founded in 1984, this 1,050-acre community is now home to more than 210 residences, with another ten under construction. Many of the 725 home sites feature spectacular views of Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway, or one of the many lagoons that dot the community.
Haig Point is home to a 29-hole Rees Jones designed golf course that has been ranked as one of the top 100 in the world. Other amenities include an equestrian center, croquet lawn, four tennis courts, fitness center with an adult swimming pool, beach club with a family swimming pool, pro shop, grill room, formal dining, general store and the historic 1872 Haig Point Lighthouse.
Haig Point is a member-owned community, offering two types of equity memberships – a full golf membership, and a social membership.
Melrose Plantation
Founded in 1985, this 730-acre community serves as home to the Daufuskie Island Resort and Breathe Spa. The resort consists of an oceanfront 52-room inn and 37 guest cottages and more than 21,000 square feet of meeting space including the Island House Conference Center. Melrose also offers an outstanding package of amenities that include an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Championship golf course, an equestrian center, croquet lawn, eight tennis courts lighted for night play, three swimming pools (one heated), an ocean front hot tub and a full fitness center. There are over 40 finished homes within Melrose on approximately 350 home sites, with a variety of views ranging from oceanfront to golf and wooded views.
Bloody Point Plantation
Founded in 1991, this 350-acre community features first and second-row ocean home sites and an interior, links-style golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Moorish. Also located in Bloody Point is the Breathe Spa, a full-service spa associated with the Daufuskie Island Resort. There are more than ten homes completed on the 110 home sites, with another two under construction. The second building of the Sandy Lane condominiums has now been completed, bringing the total number of oceanfront condominiums up from 16 to 32. Aside from golf, Bloody Point also offers a clubhouse, beachside pool and two tennis courts.
Oakridge
This 500-acre oceanfront community only began selling homesites within the last five years, on a very limited basis. Presently, there are 18 oceanfront homesites, with approximately the same number of second and third-row sites, creating a total of 55 homesites. Development planning is underway for a new community, called Beachfield, within an 85-acre subdivision of Oakridge. When completed, Beachfield will offer up to 150 homesites in a tightly knit beach oriented community.
The Historic District
Beautiful tree-lined dirt roads and small cottages meandering throughout the forests and on the marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway highlight the special nature of life outside the gates of the planned communities. Ownership opportunities exist ranging from cabins in the woods to deepwater estates, covering nearly every price range. The historic district is home to the local post office, Marshside Mama's Cafe and General Store and Freeport Marina with its Calibogue Cafe. Local tours leave Hilton Head daily and dock at Freeport Marina where folks either board a tour bus or rent golf carts to tour the island. Historic places of interest include the famous Maryfield School House where author Pat Conroy taught, the Silver Dew Winery, the Bloody Point Lighthouse and the newly refurbished First African Baptist Church which has been in use for over 100 years. When on Daufuskie, be sure to visit its beach . . . one of the few remaining naturally isolated beaches on the East coast.
