Daufuskie Island Real Estate

Daufuskie Island is a bridgeless, residential sea island in South Carolina between Savannah, Georgia and Hilton Head Island, with a resident population of approximately 425 (continues below).

Surrounded by the Intracoastal Waterway, the Atlantic Ocean, and Calibogue Sound, the island is rich in history dating back at least 4000 years.

Daufuskie Island is very accesible to visitors from all over the world.  Direct flights to Hilton Head Island (less than an hour transit time to Daufuskie) land daily from Charlotte and the world's busiest airport, Atlanta Hartsfield.  Additionally, non stop flights are available to Savannah (1 hour away) from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Houston, Newark, New York/Laugardia, Washington/Dulles, Cincinnati, Detroit and Philadelphia.  Via car, Daufuskie's ferry embarkation points on Hilton Head are 30 miles from Interstate 95, the east coast's main north-south thoroughfare.

The island is served by 3 ferry systems, all of which have embarkation points on Hilton Head Island.  The ferries land at Haig Point, Freeport Marina or the Melrose Landing.  Additionally, there is a Beaufort County dock at the southwest corner of the island for private boats.

The island is divided into several communities: to the northeast is Haig Point, a private, member owned golf course community with approximately 150 year round residents and over 225 homes. South of this is Melrose, a residential community and also home to the Daufuskie Island Resort and Breathe Spa, a publicly accessible resort. Further south is Oak Ridge, a small oceanfront community followed by Bloody Point, a private residential community.  The western part of the island is unincorporated land, a.k.a the Historic District with the exception of the Webb Tract, which is slated for mixed use commercial development, including a marina.  Each community, save the Webb Tract, is enjoying new home construction even in the face of current market conditions.

Visitors can take a tour around this historic portion of the island, with boat transportation available from nearby Hilton Head Island.  Highlights include the site of the Bloody Point Lighthouse, the Maryfield School where Pat Conroy taught, the Billie Burn (historical) Museum, and the home workshops of local artisans.

There are dining facilites located in the historic district, Melrose and Haig Point.

In addition to the 3 magnificent golf courses by Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Weiskopf/Moorish, there are 14 Har Tru tennis courts throughout the island.

The island is also home to First Union African Baptist, a non denominational, community church, which at 134 years old is Daufuskie's longest standing building.  It is still in use today as a place of worship.

The Daufuskie Island School is part of the Beaufort County School District.  Built in 1997, it is a modern Pre K through 6 facility with 13 students, offering an educational experience as enriching and unique as the island itself.

There is extensive resident participation in civic clubs and organizations, all with the goal of island betterment.

The island also features a Fire and Rescue Department, with either emergency boat or helicopter service as conditions warrant (several residents have recovered from life threatening injuries in the past year alone).
