Daufuskie Island Information

How do you get groceries?

Daufuskie Island has five small markets mostly offering staple goods. In Haig Point, property owners and guests can enjoy groceries delivered from Harris Teeter or Publix daily. The stores deliver the groceries to the dock and the incredible Haig Point staff ensures that they arrive at your door! (and even place them in your fridge, should you ask).

Yes! The Daufuskie Island Elementary School has extensive offerings including efficient, convenient bus transportation.

What emergency services are available?

Daufuskie has a fully staffed fire department and extensive volunteer firefighter network. These first responders are on the 911 network and can provide immediate care. Otherwise, the mainland and its hospitals are six minutes away, via the Harbour Town water taxi, or less, by helicopter..

How does the ferry work?

Currently there are three ferry systems. All islanders are welcome to participate in the Beaufort County supported Palmetto Breeze program, which provides discounted ferry passed to island residents.

Palmetto Ferry Company services Daufuskie Island from Salty Fare Landing on Hilton Head's north end.

J & W Corporation operates from Hilton Head's Broad Creek Marina to Daufuskie's Freeport Marina.

Haig Point offers members, guests and real estate visitors 13 daily ferry departures from their convenient Hilton Head location near the cross island expressway. Additionally, transportation originating on Daufuskie is available through Harbour Town and even accessible in the wee hours of the night.  Please contact us to arrange Haig Point ferry transportation.

How expensive is it to build on Daufuskie?

Daufuskie is home to some of the nation's finest and most exquisite estates. Complete with top-of-the-line features like mahogany, triple-hung windows. Such properties can cost more than $600 per square foot to build. Other homes, with hardwood floors, crown molding and granite counter tops, etc., have been completed at $200 a square foot.

Additionally, because Daufuskie has two daily barges from Hilton Head and Savannah, several builders utilize their own bunk houses for weekly work crews, which allows for construction costs comparable to those on Hilton Head.

Finally, the national trend in modular construction has been showcased on Daufuskie at many levels, both in building homes and condominiums. One Daufuskie home was featured in Sheri Koones book Prefabulous: The House of Your Dreams Delivered Fresh from the Factory.

The Daufuskie Company team has worked with all types of builders and we look forward to helping you identify your solution.
