Daufuksie Island Historic District

Beautiful tree-lined dirt roads and small cottages meandering throughout the forests and on the marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway highlight the special nature of life outside the gates of the planned communities. Ownership opportunities exist ranging from cabins in the woods to deepwater estates, covering nearly every price range. The historic district is home to the Daufuskie Island Elementary School, Marshside Mama's Cafe, and Freeport Marina, with its general store and restaurant. Local tours leave Hilton Head daily and dock at Freeport Marina where folks either board a tour bus or rent golf carts to tour the island. Historic places of interest include the famous Maryfield School House where author Pat Conroy taught, the Silver Dew Winery, the Bloody Point Lighthouse and the newly refurbished First African Baptist Church, which has been in use for more than 100 years. When on Daufuskie Island, be sure to visit its beach . . . one of the few remaining naturally isolated beaches on the east coast.
